Leading water treatment company unveils state of the art facility

The opening of a multi-million pound state-of-the-art water treatment facility has been hailed as a success.

Designed and installed by Worcester-based Aquabio Ltd, the plant in Boston, Lincolnshire, is owned by the Bakkavor Group, the UK’s leading provider of fresh prepared foods.

The facility at Bakkavor’s Cucina Sano site specialises in produces Italian ready meals for Marks & Spencer.

The new instalment, which became fully operational in December 2016, treats up to 700,000 litres per day and enables more than 80 per cent of the water used to be safely recycled.  It has also cut traffic flow to and from the site eliminating approximately 130 road tankers per week.

Steve Goodwin, Managing Director of Aquabio said : “As pioneers in the implementation of water recycling for food and drink companies like Bakkavor, we have provided a full turnkey installation including civil, mechanical, electrical, software, commissioning, operation and maintenance, and are delighted with the outcome.  The new plant’s recycling capabilities will significantly reduce water consumption and wastewater discharge volumes, as well as having a positive impact on the surrounding area with the elimination of a significant number of tankers per day arriving and leaving the site.”

Aquabio – which operates from its headquarters in Hallow, Worcestershire – was established in 1997 and is a European Leader in industrial water, wastewater and air treatment, and water recycling and reuse.  The company has pioneered the implementation of water recycling within a wide range of industries including food and drink, bio fuels, pulp and paper, landfill and leachate and pharmaceuticals.

Ben Cooper, Head of Operations at Cucina Sano said : “We are always working to ensure we can help sustain the environment in which we operate and are looking forward to seeing the benefits of this new plant in helping us achieve our sustainability goals in both water usage and reduced traffic flow.”

Importantly, the site has recently won the Marks and Spencer Plan A Award for Environmental Leadership, based on the new water treatment facility enabling the site to significantly reduce water consumption and wastewater discharge volumes.

This award is one of the food and drinks industry major awards which recognises a new programme or supplier that has demonstrated leadership thinking and the potential to drive significant environmental change.
