Guarding for food and drink machinery – what you need to know

Procter Machine Safety has published an online guide to guarding food and drink processing and packaging machinery. This was written by Steve Allen, who is a member of BSI standards committee MCE/3 (Safeguarding of machinery), a Certified Machinery Safety Expert and National Sales Manager at Procter Machine Safety. It is essential reading for plant managers, health and safety managers, production engineers and machine designers working in the food and drink industry.

The new guide discusses materials of construction, ways to avoid bug traps, dust/fume extraction, noise emissions and compliance with machinery safety standards. It will therefore be useful for anyone specifying new machinery, modifying existing machinery or concerned about the adequacy of particular guards.

The UK has now left the EU and the two parties have agreed new trading arrangements. Steve Allen’s article therefore addresses the need for CE marking and the new UKCA marking requirements for machinery in Great Britain.

Procter Machine Safety is the UK’s leading machine guarding specialist. Its comprehensive nationwide service includes site surveys, risk assessments, design, manufacture, installation and integration of safety devices with control systems. Rest assured, whenever Procter’s engineers are on site, they take all necessary steps to be Covid-safe.
