Only 1 seal and you’re out

The logistics of internet shopping delivery are complex. A product is handled up to twenty times, including 5 or more vehicle journeys from the factory to the consumer’s home address. Whereas a traditional high-street purchase has only half as many opportunities for damage.

This means delivered packaging needs to be much more robust, in fact Amazon insists that any liquid or cream is double sealed to prevent leakage.

What does that mean for you if you want to sell your products online?

Firstly, your packaging will have to survive the online retailers’ delivery testing procedures to ensure that products arrive at the consumer undamaged. Amazon’s test1 consists of five 3- foot drops onto a hard surface, to the: base, top, longest side, shortest side and corner of the outer packaging. The packed items must survive without breaking or leaking, and even, if it doesn’t leak liquids or creams must have a double seal.

A double seal is defined as a tightened lid that cannot be easily opened and one of the following:

  1. A “safety seal” which is a peel-off seal underneath the lid of a product, like you would find on a new ketchup bottle.
  2. A manufactured seal around the outside of the neck of the product.

Products that do not have a manufactured double seal in one of the ways above must be individually bagged in transparent sealed bags or shrink wrap (minimum of 1.5 mil.) and clearly marked with a suffocation warning label.2

The simplest of these double sealed technologies to achieve is a “safety seal” – put in place by induction cap sealing.

In induction cap sealing a foil liner is placed inside the cap of a container and as it passes through the induction field of a cap sealing machine, it forms a hermetic seal to the container in a fraction of a second. The seal is so strong that it prevents leakage and meets Amazon’s double-seal standard.

Furthermore, induction-sealed containers don’t require the cap to have an anti-tamper band or bore seal, helping to eliminate the issue of mixed plastic content, making recycling easier. While some shrink-wrap plastic can be recycled the type of plastic used depends on the material of the container and some are not recyclable.

An induction seal also increases the shelf-life of products by reducing oxidation, this maintains the colour, flavour, aroma and active ingredients of the product. So, when consumers peel back the foil, they experience the quality they expect from a brand.

Induction cap sealing is easy to install and there are machines suitable for every production environment, sealing from 5 – 500 containers a minute.
