Save valuable space with Murata’s DK1 capacitor series

High reliability, high cooling/heating cycle-resistant performance and compactness: The new DK1 capacitor series by Murata offers all these benefits and contributes to the downsizing and lower profiles of power supply equipment. The DK1 series includes 250Vac and 300Vac types in the capacitance range from 10pF up to 1,5nF, is able to withstand temperatures from -40°C to ~125°C and is rated Y1 voltage.

This is an important improvement, as for more than ten years, only more bulky solutions like radial leaded types or two or more Y2-rated series-connected multilayer ceramic chip capacitors (MLCCs) could achieve a Y1 rating. This capacitor is ideal for all AC-DC switching power supplies where a low-profile is sought for compact AV equipment, LED illumination, or 1U*3 rack mounted equipment.

Safety certified MLCCs are typically used at a power line input side in order to eliminate noise that builds up primarily in commercial AC power lines. Safety certified capacitors are usually of the lead type, but the mounted height above the board surface is a problem because it hinders efforts to make low-profile devices and it limits component layout. In addition, because lead type capacitors are through-hole mounted, the lead wires are exposed on the underside of the circuit board. A fixed amount of insulating distance between the exposed lead wires and the metal components of the device is required by safety standards, so this complicates spatial layout within a device.

The new capacitor uses a structure of plate-shaped terminals on a disc-shaped ceramic dielectric placed within a plastic mold to reduce the terminal thickness that is present with lead type capacitors, and this results in a mounted height of 2.5mm or less for the product. Furthermore, the component format enables reflow surface mount, and there is no longer a need to assure insulating distance at the underside of the board. This advances profile reduction for power supply devices subject to size limitations in compact AV equipment, LED illumination and 1U rack mounted equipment, for which spatial design has been difficult.

The mass production began in May 2017. Rutronik already ordered a first stock and will be able to deliver samples or pre-production series about the end of August.

Applications

AC-DC switching power supplies where a low-profile is sought for compact AV equipment, LED illumination, or 1U*3 rack mounted Equipment.

Can be used as a Class Y1 capacitor

As a Y capacitor for Class 2 power supplies and as a capacitor for primary and secondary couplings, this capacitor contributes to the downsizing and lower profiles of power supply equipment. It can also be used as a Class X capacitor.

The technology of disc ceramic capacitors has been applied to achieve a high withstand voltage performance that meets IEC60384-14 Y1 Class certification requirements in spite of its compactness and low profile.

The performance of the molded resin has been tuned, and the capacitor is designed so that it is joined to the substrate via metal terminals. As a result, high reliability such as high cooling/heating cycle-resistant performance is ensured.
